Chapter Thirteen

I didn’t want to hear whatever he had to say. I had enough to deal with. I ignored him and kept flipping channels. Lash grabbed the remote from my hand in a lightning quick gesture, and turned the TV off. I thought about telling him to fuck off, but knew he was stubborn enough to just trail along even if I left the room. He’d follow me until I listened to what he had to say. He was that stubborn. Just like me.

“What?” I said, exasperated.

“Look, no one else is going to say this to you,” Lash hissed. “But I’m your friend, and you need to hear it.”

His tone said he was not happy to be here, talking to me. That probably meant I wasn’t going to want to hear whatever it was he said. That alone made me curious. How much worse could the day get? I drew my knees up into my chest, folding my arms over them in a protective motion. “Say it.”

“Understand, I’m not saying what he did was right,” Lash said. “But you need to know that this is why weres usually stick to other weres—and even within the same type of animal, so they can mate. Like cougar and lion, boa and python, wolf and coyote—”

I closed my eyes, resisting the urge to put my hands over my ears.

Lash’s hand touched my shoulder, resting there gently. “I thought you knew this, that you at least had an inkling. Theo needs to be with a female of his own kind, some kind of big cat. All weres feel the drive for sex strongly, but in animal form, it’s almost undeniable. Some of that is that animals don’t think sex is ever wrong, like sleeping and eating’s not wrong. It’s a physical need. He probably could resist it when there weren’t any female cougars nearby except his daughter. But when you’re animal and male, and see a female, it’s—”

“You’re saying I should let him go to her to slake his needs?” I said bluntly.

“That or ask Titus for a potion to change yourself into a cougar,” Lash said, nonplused.

I looked at him in shock. Why hadn’t I thought of that?

“There are potions that can do it,” Lash said, nodding. “But they are expensive. Not ridiculously expensive, like the potion Devlin used to make you pregnant, or the one I used to use to stay alive, but still they’re in the thousands of dollars. It’s the damned demon blood—”

My shoulders slumped, dismayed. I—or rather, Theo and I—could afford to do it probably a few times, but I was betting it wouldn’t be enough to keep Theo satisfied, not the way Lash was describing the need for weres to have sex. Not unless we did it once a month for twenty-four hours straight at a stretch. “How long do they last?”

“Only for a few hours,” Lash said, looking at me strangely. “And even then, Devlin may not let you do it.”

“Why?”

“Because Theo could hurt you easily, having sex with you like that,” Lash said.
